The short version is this. HIFU, delivered with our Ultraformer III system, uses focused ultrasound and comes as a deeper lifting treatment and a gentler glow treatment. RF, delivered with our Venus Viva system, uses radiofrequency and comes as a comfortable tightening treatment and a resurfacing treatment. So the useful question is less HIFU versus RF, and more which concern you want to address: lifting, tightening, resurfacing or glow. Below, we explain each one, what it may help support, and how we help clients decide.

First, the two technologies
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. It directs focused ultrasound energy into the deeper layers of the skin, which is why it is associated with lifting and firmness. At our clinic, HIFU is delivered with the Ultraformer III system, so if you have researched Ultraformer, that is the same technology.
RF stands for radiofrequency, which simply means controlled energy that gently warms the skin. Our RF treatments are delivered with Venus Viva. Depending on the mode, that energy can be used to warm the deeper layers for tightening, or delivered in a fractional pattern nearer the surface for resurfacing.
The important point we make with every client is this: HIFU and RF are not a straight one-versus-one choice, because each system offers more than one treatment. It helps to see all four.

The four treatments, and what each may help support
Ultraformer III Face Contouring
Our non-surgical lifting treatment. It uses high-intensity focused ultrasound to deliver focused energy deep beneath the skin, including the SMAS layer, the same layer addressed in a surgical facelift. It is intended to encourage new collagen and may help support a lifted, tighter and more defined appearance across areas such as the brows, cheeks, jawline and neck. It is not surgery and does not promise surgical outcomes. Best performed as a course.
Ultraformer III Hollywood Lift
A gentle, superficial Ultraformer III treatment. It uses ultrasound energy in the upper layers of the skin to encourage collagen, and may help support smoother texture, the look of refined pores and a brighter, fresher, more radiant complexion. Rather than lifting, its focus is skin quality, glow and prevention. This makes it a popular choice before an event, or as part of an ongoing skin maintenance program.
Venus Viva Multipolar RF Skin Tightening
A comfortable treatment with no downtime. It uses Multipolar radiofrequency together with PEMF to gently heat the deeper layers of the skin. This is intended to encourage collagen and elastin, and may help support improved firmness, elasticity and the appearance of fine lines, with an overall tightening effect. Best performed as a course of treatments for progressive improvement.
Venus Viva Nanofractional RF Resurfacing
An advanced resurfacing treatment. It uses tiny pins to deliver fractional radiofrequency energy into the skin, creating controlled micro-injuries that are intended to encourage collagen remodelling. It may help support improvements in the appearance of skin texture, acne scarring, enlarged pores, pigmentation, fine lines and overall skin quality. It is primarily a resurfacing treatment rather than a lifting one.
HIFU vs RF: matching the treatment to the concern
Because there are four treatments, the honest comparison is less about ultrasound versus radiofrequency and more about matching the right treatment to your main concern.

If your goal is lifting and definition
For loss of firmness along the brows, cheeks, jawline or neck, Ultraformer III Face Contouring is our deeper, lifting-focused option. It may help support a more lifted, defined appearance over a course.
If your goal is comfortable tightening
For overall firmness and elasticity with no downtime, Venus Viva Multipolar RF Skin Tightening warms the deeper layers to help support a tightening effect. It suits clients who want a gradual, comfortable course.
If your goal is resurfacing
For texture, acne scarring, enlarged pores, pigmentation or fine lines, Venus Viva Nanofractional RF is our resurfacing treatment. It works nearer the surface to help refine skin quality over time.
If your goal is glow
For radiance and skin quality before an event, or as maintenance, the Ultraformer III Hollywood Lift focuses on brightness and texture rather than lifting.
Not rivals, often partners
This is the point clients find most reassuring. These treatments are not competitors. Because each addresses a different concern, they are frequently planned together within one treatment plan. Someone might combine HIFU lifting with Nanofractional RF resurfacing, or Multipolar RF tightening with a Hollywood Facial before an event. The right combination is mapped to your skin, not sold from a list.
Which is right for your skin?
Here is a simple way to think about it before you book. Lead with your main concern:
- Lifting and definition: Ultraformer III Face Contouring.
- Comfortable, no-downtime tightening: Venus Viva Multipolar RF.
- Texture, scarring, pores or pigmentation: Venus Viva Nanofractional RF.
- Glow and skin quality before an event: Ultraformer III Hollywood Lift.
In practice, many people benefit from a combination. That is not us upselling. It is simply that lifting, tightening, resurfacing and glow are different goals, and they sometimes call for different tools. The right way to work it out is to look at your skin properly first.
What to expect from a treatment plan
All four treatments work gradually, with your skin’s own processes, so one session rarely tells the whole story. We plan them as a course, with the number of sessions and the timeframe tailored to your skin at your assessment, rather than promising everything from a single visit.
Recovery is honest and manageable, and it varies by treatment.
- Venus Viva Multipolar RF tightening has no downtime.
- After Nanofractional RF resurfacing, skin can look pink with a fine surface texture for a short period as it recovers.
- After HIFU, skin can feel slightly tender or look mildly flushed, and this typically settles.
Everybody responds a little differently, which is why we talk every client through aftercare specific to their skin and their treatment plan. Individual results may vary.
How we help you decide
The most useful thing we do is not sell you a treatment. It is look at your skin properly before recommending anything. A facial imaging skin assessment lets us see beneath the surface, understand your concerns, and map a personalised plan around lifting, tightening, resurfacing, glow, or a combination.
If you are still weighing up HIFU vs RF, that assessment is the place to bring the question. We would always rather you understood the treatments fully before booking one.
We see clients for skin tightening and resurfacing from across the Illawarra, including Shellharbour and Wollongong, and the starting point is the same for everyone: understand the skin first, then choose the treatment.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between HIFU and RF?
HIFU, delivered with Ultraformer III, uses focused ultrasound in the deeper layers and is associated with lifting. RF, delivered with Venus Viva, uses radiofrequency and can be used for comfortable tightening or for resurfacing. At our clinic each system offers more than one treatment, so the more useful question is which concern you want to address: lifting, tightening, resurfacing or glow.
Does Venus Viva tighten or resurface?
Both, depending on the mode. Venus Viva Multipolar RF is a comfortable, no-downtime tightening treatment that warms the deeper layers. Venus Viva Nanofractional RF is a resurfacing treatment that uses fractional energy nearer the surface for texture, scarring, pores and pigmentation. We choose the mode based on your concern.
Can I combine these treatments?
Often, yes. Because lifting, tightening, resurfacing and glow are different goals, the treatments are frequently planned together across one treatment plan. We map the right combination for your skin at your assessment. Individual results may vary.
Is there downtime with HIFU or RF?
It varies by treatment. Venus Viva Multipolar RF tightening has no downtime. After Nanofractional RF resurfacing, skin can look pink with a fine texture for a short period. After HIFU, skin can feel slightly tender or look mildly flushed, and this typically settles. We tailor aftercare to you.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies from person to person and depends on your skin and your concern. All of these treatments work gradually, so we plan a realistic course at your consultation. Individual results may vary.
