I have small varicose veins on my legs. Is there anything I can do about them?

Small superficial veins, also know as spider veins or small varicose veins, may develop after pregnancy, in standing vocations such as hair dressing, teacher, or working as a shop assistant, or they may just appear because they are hereditary. They can be successfully treated.

The treatment of choice is sclerotherapy. Here, using a very fine needle, the veins are injected with a solution which injures the vein wall, causing the vein to close down and be reabsorbed.

This is a relatively safe, quick and simple procedure. Normal daily activities may be continued immediately after treatment. For larger or more extensive spider veins it may be necessary to wear compression stockings or bandaging for a short period of time after treatment.

In some cases successful treatment may require a series of visits. This depends on the condition and will be determined by your physician.

Larger and more extensive varicose veins may require a duplex scan to map the vein system. This procedure helps determine if the veins are suitable for sclerotherapy. If it is determined sclerotherapy is suitable then the injections are conducted and guided by ultrasound, or endovascular laser ablation. If these procedures are necessary then referral to an appropriate phlebologist will be arranged.

Dr Muzikants is able to offer these procedures and visits our Wollongong clinic every month to provide guidance and treatment. If you are troubled by spider veins or varicose veins make an appointment for a consultation on his next visit.
