Skin Correctives was named Business of the Year at Wednesday night’s 2014 Illawarra and South Coast Local Business Awards.
The Shellharbour and Wollongong business that combines traditional beauty therapies and skin treatments with innovative paramedical skin technologies won the beauty services category before winning the big one at the awards held at Dapto Leagues Club.
Business owner Karen Meiring de González arrived in Australia only 3½ years ago and her two salons and staff numbers have grown quickly.
The first opened in Cygnet Avenue, Shellharbour and the second in Corrimal Street, Wollongong, 18 months later.
“I am absolutely shocked we won the gold award,” Mrs Meiring de González said.
“I am particularly pleased for my staff of seven. It is great recognition for all the effort and hard work they have put in.
“They are not just beauty therapists and it is important they understand how much they are valued and the work they have put in has been recognised. They make this business.
“They work behind the scenes very hard and do a lot outside work as well. This will be a great boost for them.”
Mrs Meiring de González said all her employees always went to the local business awards and treated it as a celebration of a year of hard work regardless of the result.
“We consider these awards as an endorsement as leaders in our field,” she said.
“We are thrilled, honoured and grateful. We will now focus on our next event, which is Care & Share for Autism. We have been awarded and now it is our time to give back.”
