Search for skin needling near you and you will find plenty of places offering a needling treatment. What is harder to find is a straight answer to the question that matters: which type of needling suits your skin. Needling is not one treatment. It is a family, and its members do different jobs.

The shared principle: collagen induction

All three treatments work on the same biological truth. When skin receives controlled micro-wounds, it responds by producing fresh collagen and elastin: rebuilding structure, softening scars and improving texture. The micro-punctures close within minutes; the rebuilding continues for weeks.

Where the three differ is depth, intensity and downtime, and that is what should drive the choice.

Microneedling: the all-rounder

Microneedling creates fine micro-punctures in the upper layers of skin: a controlled wound-healing response with minimal downtime.

Deep needling: the scar specialist

Deep needling reaches into the deeper dermal layers, where established scar tissue lives, to stimulate collagen inside the scar.

• Suits: stubborn, structural scarring; post-surgical, post-acne, chickenpox, piercing and burn scars
• Comfort: mild tingling; minimal surface bleeding is possible
• Downtime: moderate; tenderness, dryness or redness for up to four days
• Time and cost: 30 to 40 minutes; from $190 (area-based)
• Honest note: deep and burn scars are slow responders, taking up to six months to show a single treatment’s full effect. For post-surgical scars, we ask for clearance from your surgeon before treatment begins.

Pro-Stamp ECIT: the intensive

Pro-Stamp ECIT, electro collagen induction therapy, pairs needling with electro signals that support blood flow, growth factor and collagen production; a system significantly more powerful than standard needling. For scars specifically, ECIT may help relax and break up the dense fibres that make scar tissue tight, encouraging collagen to realign.

• Suits: dense scar tissue, skin laxity alongside scarring, face and body work
• Comfort: localised numbing beforehand; a quick stamping technique
• Downtime: around four days on average; a sunburnt-like feeling, with possible pin-point bruising
• Time and cost: 60 to 90 minutes; from $449 (face, excluding numbing)

So which one is right for you?
