About the Condition

Skin pigmentation can affect all skin colours, types and conditions and is defined as areas of discoloured skin, freckles or sunspots which often affect areas of your face, as well as shoulders, décolletage and hands.

The two different types of skin pigmentation are passive and inflammatory skin pigmentation. A range of external, internal and genetic factors can stimulate your skin pigments (melanin) resulting in an uneven skin tone and making your skin look older than it is.

Passive skin pigmentation often results from an internal imbalance which activates your skins natural melanin-stimulating hormones. It can be caused by a range of factors including medications like the contraceptive pill, hormonal imbalances from pre-existing conditions and pregnancy.

Inflammatory skin pigmentation is caused by your skin’s natural reaction to external stimuli which is causing damage to your skin, which stimulates melanin production to protect and heal the inflamed skin. It can be caused by external factors such as excessive sun exposure, incorrect treatments and trauma to the skin caused by skin picking or burns.
